Booking a cruise holiday involves multiple considerations, from selecting the right itinerary to understanding onboard entertainment options. Michelle Kirkham, a retail manager with 38 years of experience at TUI, including work with Marella Cruises, has identified several common mistakes frequently made by first-time cruisers.
Kirkham emphasizes that the most frequent error is choosing a cruise solely based on price. While a lower fare may seem appealing, it does not always align with a traveler’s preferences or expectations. “The secret is picking the right ship and experience first,” she explained. Since passengers spend the majority of their time onboard, the choice of ship significantly influences the overall holiday experience. Options include ships geared toward relaxation, family-friendly environments, or adults-only atmospheres, each catering to different holiday styles.
Selecting the appropriate cabin is another important factor, especially for newcomers who may be uncertain about their preferences. Kirkham advises, “If your budget allows, go for a balcony cabin. It gives you space, privacy and those incredible sea views. It really elevates your first cruise.” However, she also notes that one does not necessarily have to spend a great deal, but should be aware of what is included in the package to avoid unexpected expenses. Typically, accommodation, main meals, and entertainment are covered, while add-ons such as drinks packages, shore excursions, and WiFi often incur additional costs. Planning ahead for these extras can help ensure a smooth and stress-free experience.
Regarding booking timing, cruise lines often open reservations up to two years in advance. Industry insiders recommend booking 12 to 18 months ahead to secure the best availability and cabin choices. Conversely, there are also opportunities to find last-minute deals if travelers are flexible with dates and itineraries and willing to take risks on shorter notice.
For first-time cruisers, Kirkham suggests considering a Mediterranean itinerary, such as Marella’s “Highlights of the Mediterranean,” which stops at popular destinations including Barcelona, Cannes, and Naples. She describes this itinerary as having “real bucket list appeal,” with minimal sea days and multiple iconic locations to explore, making it an excellent introduction to cruising.
Kirkham also addresses lingering misconceptions about cruise holidays. “First-time cruisers are often put off by outdated myths,” she said. Modern cruise ships offer a wide range of experiences and are designed to resemble floating resorts rather than formal or old-fashioned vessels. Today’s cruises cater to a broad demographic, providing options for relaxation, adventure, or a lively atmosphere to suit various tastes and ages.
