Competition for entry-level roles in the finance sector has become increasingly fierce, with applicants facing heightened rivalry for internships and graduate positions in major financial hubs such as London and New York. Industry insiders emphasize the importance of early and proactive preparation to navigate this challenging landscape.
Historically, securing an internship at a leading financial institution could often be influenced by personal connections or recommendations. However, these networks no longer guarantee a foot in the door. Instead, aspiring candidates are turning to digital resources to build familiarity with the industry’s specialized terminology and expectations. Platforms like TikTok finance content—sometimes called “FinTok”—and educational YouTube channels provide accessible entry points for job seekers to develop their financial literacy.
Social media also plays a key role in the job search process. LinkedIn, the professional networking site, is widely used by newcomers aiming to establish direct contact with investment banks, trading firms, and asset management companies. Despite this, identifying and leveraging the right connections on LinkedIn remains a challenge, often requiring more than merely passive online engagement to stand out among a large pool of applicants.
To address this, specialist recruiters and targeted online platforms have emerged as valuable intermediaries. In the United States, Handshake serves as a prominent example, linking students and recent graduates with internship and entry-level opportunities across sectors including finance. The platform provides insights into paid internships and graduate roles in Wall Street firms and other global financial centres, with internships frequently functioning as pipelines to full-time employment.
According to Randy Tarnowski, research director at Handshake, the intensity of competition for finance internships has notably increased. He highlights that popular investment banking internships attracted an average of 382 applications each last year, a figure more than triple that for non-financial internships on the platform.
In the United Kingdom, Bright Network, established by James Uffindell, offers a similar service with a focus on graduate recruitment. It combines job listings with online resources to help candidates prepare for a wide range of roles within the finance industry.
As the demand for roles in banking, trading, and fund management continues to rise, experts recommend that candidates begin their preparations well in advance and utilize a combination of digital tools, professional networks, and recruitment platforms to maximize their chances of success in a highly competitive job market.
