Concerns have been raised about the treatment of women in the United Arab Emirates, particularly in Dubai, amid growing reports of exploitation and abuse. Radha Stirling, a campaigner focused on detainees in Dubai, has highlighted numerous cases involving women who have alleged serious crimes such as drugging and sexual assault. According to Stirling, these women often face further victimization when reporting incidents to UAE authorities, who may treat them as criminals rather than victims. She has called on the British government to investigate the extent of violence against women in the country. The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office has been contacted for comment.
Despite these concerns, Dubai continues to attract a significant number of British tourists and expatriates, drawn by its reputation as a glamorous and prosperous destination. Social media has played a significant role in shaping the perception known as the "Dubai dream," with influencers promoting an image of lavish lifestyles featuring beaches, luxury dining, and vibrant urban life. In fact, Dubai’s tourism department established an “influencer academy” last year aimed at training social media personalities to showcase the city positively. Additionally, the UAE offers a “golden visa” program that grants content creators residency for up to 10 years, further encouraging digital entrepreneurs to relocate.
Stirling acknowledges that some influencer contracts are legitimate and can provide rewarding opportunities, particularly for young women. However, she warns that many are misled by the polished online portrayals of success and may underestimate the risks involved. In reality, there are widespread accounts of women being deceived with promises of modelling or social media jobs only to face exploitation, including allegations of being sold, subjected to drugging, and sexual violence. Allegations have even surfaced regarding so-called "porta-potty parties," where women reportedly endure degrading sexual acts for payment.
While Dubai offers a vibrant and prosperous image supported by government-backed incentives, significant concerns remain about the safety and rights of women who come to the city seeking opportunities. The contrast between the social media portrayal and the experiences shared by survivors has prompted calls for more thorough investigation and protection measures for vulnerable individuals arriving in the UAE.
