Ashton Collins, head of the government-approved registry Save Face, described the situation as an expanding "criminal underground," where increasing demand for cosmetic treatments has encouraged unregulated providers to fill the gap. Collins emphasized the urgent need for stricter regulation, a call supported by Nora Nugent, chair of the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons.

The issue gained renewed attention more than a year after the government announced plans to tighten controls on rogue cosmetic operators, with little progress reported since the initial announcement last August. Critics argue that the lack of enforcement has allowed dangerous procedures to continue unchecked, with potential for serious health complications.

Medical professionals have warned that unqualified injectors performing these procedures pose significant risks, including infections and tissue damage. Dr. Syed Nadeem Abbas of Dr SNA Clinic compared the current trend to earlier controversies surrounding unregulated lip fillers, noting how the popularity of treatments drives down prices and attracts inadequately trained individuals. “It’s lip filler all over again,” he said, pointing out that some practitioners may have only completed short weekend courses before moving on to more complex areas like penile injections.

This development follows recent warnings about unregulated fillers being used by men seeking to increase penile size, further highlighting broader concerns over the rise of unsafe cosmetic procedures outside regulated environments. The ease of promotion through social media combined with minimal formal oversight has created challenges for health authorities attempting to safeguard patient safety.

Industry experts continue to call on the government to implement and enforce stricter regulations to prevent unqualified practitioners from operating, noting that failure to act puts vulnerable individuals at risk of disfigurement and serious harm.
