China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi emphasized the need for concrete actions to strengthen Sino-US relations during a phone call with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Tuesday. Wang called on both countries to expand their areas of cooperation, reduce points of conflict, and manage risks carefully to foster a constructive relationship grounded in strategic stability.
Wang highlighted the Taiwan issue as a key factor influencing the broader bilateral relationship and urged the United States to exercise caution in its handling of Taiwan-related matters. He stressed that building a stable and cooperative framework between China and the United States aligns with the interests of both peoples and fulfills international expectations.
The phone conversation follows significant progress made during US President Donald Trump’s historic state visit to China in May, the first by a sitting US president in nearly nine years. During that visit, Xi Jinping and Trump agreed on a series of shared objectives aimed at promoting a constructive bilateral relationship that balances cooperation and competition, manages differences, and supports enduring peace and stability over the coming years.
Wang reiterated that the concept of “constructive strategic stability” is more than rhetoric; it demands sustained effort, aligned policies, and tangible measures. He called on both sides to uphold principles of equality, respect, and mutual benefit, transforming the agreements reached by their leaders into actionable steps.
According to a statement from China’s Foreign Ministry, the two foreign ministers described the discussion as positive and constructive, agreeing to continue implementing the commitments made by Xi and Trump and to maintain flexible channels of communication. Beyond the strategic dialogue, the two countries also seek to stabilize economic and trade relations, enhance practical cooperation in various sectors, and improve communication on regional and global issues.
This ongoing engagement reflects a mutual recognition of the importance of managing complex challenges while advancing collaborative efforts designed to sustain a stable and constructive bilateral relationship.
