A conference organized by Dialog, a membership group co-founded by billionaire investor Peter Thiel, has been cancelled in Ireland following significant public opposition. The event was scheduled to take place in August at the Powerscourt Hotel in Wicklow but was called off amid controversy surrounding the organization and its perceived associations.
Dialog, established two decades ago and once linked to Thiel—known for his investments in companies such as Facebook, PayPal, and Palantir, as well as his support for former U.S. President Donald Trump—has faced criticism for being viewed by some as a gathering of “shadowy elites.” Although Thiel is reported to have limited involvement with the group currently, this has not quelled skepticism among critics.
The invitation-only organization comprises a diverse membership including politicians, defense figures, academics, entrepreneurs, journalists, and creatives. The group holds meetings under Chatham House rules, intended to facilitate frank and confidential discussions on contemporary issues. Recent publication of a list of individuals associated with Dialog on social media sparked public backlash, prompting several members to publicly distance themselves, such as actors Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Sophia Bush.
In contrast, some members, including academic Steven Pinker, defended the group, describing the gathering as politically diverse and not affiliated with any particular ideological agenda. Pinker and others emphasized that Dialog’s meetings are intended to encourage in-depth conversations rather than function as a secretive or partisan assembly.
The proposed conference drew criticism from political figures in Ireland. Sinn Féin called for the event to be banned, while the Labour Party sought clarity on whether the government was involved in or financially supporting the meeting.
The Powerscourt Estate, which owns the venue where the hotel is located, also voiced opposition to the event. Sarah Slazenger, the estate’s managing director, who is known for her work in environmental and social reform, expressed relief over the cancellation. She thanked supporters, including staff, neighbors, legal counsel, and others who stood with the estate during the controversy.
At the time of reporting, Dialog had not issued a public response to the cancellation.
