Muscat Municipality has commenced construction on the Muttrah Square waterfront development, a project aimed at revitalizing the historic district and enhancing its urban and cultural identity. The initiative is part of broader efforts to strengthen Muttrah’s appeal to both residents and visitors by creating a new public gathering space along the city’s corniche.

The Muttrah Square project, which won the first Bilarab bin Haitham Award for Architectural Design in 2022, was developed by a team of young Omani architects, including Ahmed al Jahdhami, Omaima al Hinai, and Abdullah al Bahri. The award targets designers and planners under 35 years old, emphasizing innovation and local cultural themes.

Central to the project is a pedestrian bridge designed to resemble a bird in flight, inspired by the sword of Imam Al Salt bin Malik al Kharousi. The bridge will be positioned above the sea opposite the Muttrah Fish Market, framing notable landmarks and creating a visual and physical link between various parts of the development.

Surrounding the bridge, the plan includes a multi-use plaza featuring a dancing water fountain, retail units, cafes, and carefully designed lighting intended to harmonize with the natural movement of sea waves. These elements seek to foster a dynamic public space that integrates leisure, commerce, and cultural expression.

The construction contract, valued at approximately RO 8.959 million, covers several components: site preparation with earthworks and groundwater extraction, the bridge’s construction, development of two commercial wings, installation of the fountain, establishment of rainwater drainage and essential utilities, as well as landscaping and the provision of public amenities.

The project is being implemented under directives from His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, reflecting the government’s commitment to enhancing urban infrastructure and tourism in Muscat. Upon completion, Muttrah Square is anticipated to become a significant architectural and touristic landmark that complements the existing waterfront attractions, including the updated Muttrah Fish Market and the adjacent corniche.
