The construction sector has experienced significant salary growth over the past year, outpacing all other industries for workers who changed jobs, according to an analysis by payroll and human resources firm ADP. Since August 2023, construction job changers have consistently seen higher pay increases compared to peers in other fields.

Data from June 2026 reveals that year-over-year wage growth for workers transitioning within construction reached 12.9%. This increase reflects rising compensation for electricians, plumbers, carpenters, HVAC technicians, and other skilled tradespeople. The trend suggests that these specialized roles are benefiting from strong demand, driving higher salaries as professionals leverage their expertise to advance their careers.

Nela Richardson, ADP’s chief economist and head of research, highlighted the notable upward trajectory in pay for construction trades, identifying them as particularly lucrative career paths this year. “Specialty trades are the ‘it’ career of the year,” Richardson noted, emphasizing how workers with these skills have capitalized on their qualifications to earn substantial salary gains.

The surge in construction wages comes amid broader labor market shifts where workers seek increased pay and better opportunities. Growing infrastructure projects and heightened demand for installation, repair, and maintenance services are among factors contributing to the expansion within the sector. For professionals in the skilled trades, the combination of strong market demand and limited labor supply has translated into significant financial incentives.

Overall, the data underscores construction’s role as a leading area for wage growth across the economy, particularly for those who change jobs. It also highlights the value of specialized skills that remain in high demand as economic conditions evolve.
