New Delhi police have registered a case against several leaders and workers of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) following an alleged assault on a plainclothes police officer during AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal’s visit to Tilak Nagar on Monday. The complaint names AAP leaders Saurabh Bhardwaj, Jarnail Singh, Sahib Singh, and party workers in connection with the incident.
The police officer, identified as Head Constable Ashok Kumar, was reportedly assigned to videography duties and was recording the proceedings during Kejriwal’s visit when he was allegedly surrounded and assaulted by a group of AAP supporters. After the incident, Kumar underwent a medical examination, and authorities registered the case under provisions relating to assault on a public servant and obstructing a government employee in the discharge of official duties.
Kejriwal’s visit came a day after Delhi Minister Parvesh Verma was involved in a separate controversy in Tilak Nagar, where he was seen slapping a youth during a road inspection, an event witnessed by AAP MLA Jarnail Singh.
On Monday, Kejriwal, accompanied by Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Singh, Jarnail Singh, and other party leaders, inspected a newly constructed road in the area. During the inspection, he highlighted alleged defects in the road’s construction, demonstrating that sections of the surface could be pulled apart by hand. Kejriwal criticized the quality of the work and questioned the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Delhi government over the irregularities.
“This road was constructed only a few days ago, yet it is completely coming apart just by hand. We have never seen a road like this being constructed in Delhi. We used to hear about such roads being built in remote villages and areas of the country. Delhi is the national capital. We also led Delhi for 10 years, but a road like this was never constructed during our tenure,” he said.
The AAP and BJP have frequently exchanged accusations over governance and infrastructure development in Delhi, with this incident further intensifying the political contest in the capital. Authorities continue to investigate the assault allegation and the circumstances surrounding Kejriwal’s visit.
