A 14-year-old boy was taken into custody on suspicion of murder after the body of a girl was found in Duffryn Park, Blaina, authorities confirmed on Monday evening. The discovery came amid a large-scale search for the missing teenager, Lilly, who had been reported missing by her family earlier that day.
Lilly, also 14, was last seen around 6:50 p.m. on Saturday on the high street of the former mining village near Ebbw Vale. Concern grew after her phone was reportedly switched off, prompting a widespread community search and a public appeal from her mother, Gemma Jones, who urged for her safe return.
Gwent Police launched a coordinated operation involving officers and helicopters to locate the missing girl. At approximately 10:10 p.m. on Monday, the body of a female was found about half a mile from where Lilly was last seen. Police have not yet formally identified the body but have informed Lilly’s family.
A police spokesperson confirmed a murder investigation is underway, with detectives working to establish the circumstances surrounding the discovery. Detective Chief Inspector Steven Thomas acknowledged the impact of the incident on the local community, stating officers remain present in the area as inquiries continue.
Local councillor Lisa Catherine Winnett expressed sympathy for the family and the wider community, describing the loss as deeply affecting the close-knit village.
Authorities have not released further details regarding the suspect or the investigation’s progress.
