A recent survey conducted by the Copyright Licensing Agency has uncovered widespread confusion among legal professionals regarding copyright rules and permissibility. According to the research, only 2 percent of respondents correctly understood the scope and limitations of lawful copying and distribution of copyrighted material.

The study revealed a notable disparity between perceived and actual knowledge of copyright best practices. While 72 percent of participants rated their comprehension highly, the researchers characterized this as a significant gap between confidence and true understanding within the profession.

In addition to general copyright awareness, the survey explored the adoption of generative artificial intelligence among legal practitioners. Approximately 70 percent reported using some form of AI technology in their work. However, the agency noted that fewer than 10 percent of law firms held the necessary copyright licences to lawfully use copyrighted content within these AI tools, raising concerns about potential infringement risks.

These findings suggest that despite a growing reliance on digital and AI resources in law firms, there remains a substantial disconnect between current copyright compliance requirements and the knowledge or licensing arrangements in place. The Copyright Licensing Agency’s research highlights the need for improved education and clearer guidance to ensure legal professionals can navigate copyright issues confidently and lawfully.
