Coral reefs worldwide are facing rapidly worsening conditions as frequent and severe marine heat waves driven by climate change reduce their ability to recover, according to a recent comprehensive global assessment. The report, compiled by the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network and based on over 40 years of data from nearly 37,000 reef sites across 120 countries and territories, highlights a dramatic decline in coral cover and warns of potential irreversible losses.
Between 2020 and 2024, coral cover worldwide dropped by 9.5 percent compared to the period from 1980 to 2009. The assessment also noted the largest single-year decline on record occurred in 2024, with bleaching affecting approximately 87 percent of reefs globally. Since 2010, the frequency of global bleaching events has roughly doubled from occurring once every decade to every four to six years, leaving reefs with insufficient time to recover from repeated stress.
Coral bleaching happens when corals, under heat stress, expel the symbiotic algae that provide them with nutrients and their characteristic color. While bleached corals are not necessarily dead, they require cooler conditions and extended periods without heat stress to recover. Scientists emphasize that recovery typically takes decades, but the increased frequency of bleaching events now curtails the natural ebb and flow of stress and regeneration.
Lead author Manuel Gonzalez-Rivero of the Australian Institute of Marine Science pointed to this narrowing recovery window as especially concerning. “If we give them enough time, they have the capacity to recover,” he said, but added that reefs are not receiving this reprieve due to the escalating pace of bleaching events.
Additional scientific voices express concern that the situation could be worse than the report indicates. Carlos Duarte, director of the Coral Research and Development Accelerator Platform, pointed out that the full impact of the most recent and intense bleaching event, beginning in 2023, may not yet be fully reflected in the data. He cited examples of corals bleaching for the first time in Western Australia, significant mortality in Red Sea reefs without clear signs of regeneration, and Caribbean reefs suffering severe losses in genetic diversity. Duarte warned that the upcoming El Niño event is likely to trigger another global bleaching episode and projected potential coral loss ranging from 70 to 99 percent if average global temperatures rise between 1.5 and 2 degrees Celsius above preindustrial levels.
Terry Hughes, former director of the Coral Reef Studies Unit at James Cook University, cautioned that measurements of coral cover alone might mask losses in reef biodiversity. He explained that while some fast-growing coral species may quickly repopulate damaged areas, this can diminish overall diversity and resiliency, likening the shift to replacing a forest with flammable grass more vulnerable to future heat waves.
Efforts to mitigate local stressors, such as pollution and coastal ecosystem degradation, can contribute to reef resilience, but many experts emphasize that reducing greenhouse gas emissions remains crucial to improving coral survival prospects. The report’s release coincides with discussions among Pacific Islands Forum leaders in Palau aimed at coordinating climate action ahead of the upcoming COP31 climate conference.
David Obura, chair of the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services, underscored the urgency: “We must act now to halt this decline and invest in solutions that reduce pressures and build resilience. Delayed action risks locking in irreversible losses.”
