LAS VEGAS — Corey Day secured his third career NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series win in a highly competitive race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Saturday, edging out Carson Kvapil by just 0.287 seconds in the Focused Health 302. The 20-year-old Hendrick Motorsports rookie seized the victory following a tense battle in the closing laps of the event.

Day, who started from pole position in his No. 17 Chevrolet, dominated much of the race, leading a career-best 136 of the 201 laps. The final 12 laps saw multiple lead changes between Day and Kvapil, with the pair swapping the top spot four times before Day executed a bold move after lightly contacting the wall with two laps remaining, ultimately clinching the win.

“It was nerve-wracking there at the end. I was so worried I’d lose control and let him get past me,” Day said after the race. He acknowledged that the team had struggled during the summer portion of the season but felt confident going forward. “We won at Talladega in April and had a strong run at Dover, but then things slipped. This feels great, especially to bounce back with such a dominant performance. I knew we’d be contenders from the start of the year.”

Day’s victory vaults him to fifth in the 12-driver championship standings, with five races left in the season.

Carson Kvapil, 23, driving for JR Motorsports, also claimed his first O’Reilly Series wins this season at Indianapolis and Iowa. Despite the narrow loss, Kvapil expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance and optimism for the rest of the season. His runner-up finish moved him into second place in the championship, trailing leader Sheldon Creed of Haas Factory Racing by 19 points. Creed finished 13th on Saturday.

“I felt strong around the bottom line and had a really good car today,” Kvapil said. “Hats off to the team for delivering a top-three machine.”

Reigning series champion Jesse Love of Richard Childress Racing came home third, closely followed by Joe Gibbs Racing teammates William Sawalich and Taylor Gray, both of whom are not eligible for the championship playoff. Another Chase-eligible driver, Sam Mayer of Haas Factory Racing, rallied from a pit stop penalty and finished sixth after winning Stage 2 and leading 40 laps.

The top 10 also included non-playoff drivers Jeremy Clements, William Sawalich, and Anthony Alfredo in seventh, eighth, and tenth places respectively, with Chase driver Austin Hill rounding out the top nine.

The NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series will continue next Saturday at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
