Mikey North, the actor behind the long-running character Gary Windass on the British soap opera Coronation Street, has spoken candidly about the physical toll of performing many of his own stunts on the show. The 39-year-old, who has been portraying Gary since 2008, revealed that his commitment to realism has resulted in numerous injuries, including broken bones and scars.

North described several notable incidents during fight scenes, such as breaking a rib after a stunt involving co-star Joe Layton (Mick Michaelis) and accidentally injuring himself during a rehearsal with Sol Heras, who played Ryan Connor. He also recounted a memorable stunt with Chris Gascoyne, portraying Peter Barlow, where an unexpected move helped bring authenticity to their on-screen altercation. North emphasized his enthusiasm for stunt work, noting that whenever possible he prefers to perform his own action scenes rather than relying on doubles.

Throughout his tenure on Coronation Street, Gary Windass has evolved from a streetwise troublemaker to a more complex character balancing family life and moral ambiguity. North highlighted recent storylines that have painted Gary in a more heroic light, portraying him as a figure who targets wrongdoers and embodies a modern Robin Hood archetype. However, Gary remains entangled in criminal activity, including aiding ex-girlfriend Sarah Platt (Tina O’Brien) in concealing evidence related to the murder of Theo Silverton.

Upcoming plot developments focus on the increasing pressure from Detective Kit Green (Jacob Roberts), Sarah’s current partner, who uncovers incriminating proof that could lead to Gary’s arrest. North explained that Gary faces a dilemma between evading the authorities and coming forward to accept responsibility. Meanwhile, the character’s wife Maria (Samia Longchambon) is also under police scrutiny, with suspicions that she may be withholding information about the night of Theo’s death, further straining their marriage.

Outside of his work on the soap, North lives in Bolton with his wife, Rachael, and their two children. He shared personal anecdotes, including overcoming a long-held fear of driving after appearing on a reality TV show in 2018, where he finally earned his driver’s license at age 30. North also expressed interest in participating in cooking-related reality programming, citing celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay as an inspiration for his enthusiasm in the kitchen.

Before pursuing acting, North was a promising cricketer in his youth, competing alongside future England internationals. His early passion for performance led him to write to numerous agents at age 15, resulting in a breakthrough role onstage in London. He subsequently landed television roles in series such as The Bill, Waterloo Road, and Doctors, often cast as antagonistic characters due in part to his distinctive red hair.

Since joining Coronation Street at 21, North’s character has developed into a father of three and a central figure with a complicated past, including involvement in a fatal factory accident and the murder of a loan shark. Despite the dramatic twists, North remains committed to his role and the soap, though he acknowledges that the character’s turbulent storyline may dictate his future on the show.
