Melbourne-based trainer Andrea Leek secured her first Group 1 victory when Cosmic Crusader won the A$750,000 Turnbull Stakes at Flemington on October 3. The 2,000-meter weight-for-age race, held on a heavy track, saw the Perth-owned gelding finish 1¾ lengths ahead of Light Infantry Man, ridden by Harry Coffey, with Aeliana in third place.
Cosmic Crusader, ridden by William Pike at odds of $30, demonstrated adaptability to the demanding conditions, which appeared to suit the six-year-old son of Maurice. Leek noted that prior to this race, the horse had not competed beyond 1,800 meters but showed ample fitness to manage the increased distance effectively. The gelding’s previous form included a Group 1 victory in the 2025 Northerly Stakes over 1,800 meters under former trainer Michael Grantham and success on softer tracks, with five wins from six starts.
Leek described training Cosmic Crusader on a heavy track at Pakenham as foundational to the horse’s ability to handle the wet conditions at Flemington. “He went across the top of it like it was a good track. I was confident he would handle the wet,” she said. The trainer also highlighted how the focus on her horses has been a positive outlet amid personal challenges, including her husband John’s current disqualification, which has prevented him from remaining on the family property.
Jockey Pike emphasized the significance of track conditions to their victory, suggesting that a firmer surface during a previous race may have compromised Cosmic Crusader’s performance. “To get good cut out of it today, I think it wasn’t quite as heavy as I initially thought, and he loved it,” Pike commented.
Leek expressed intentions to continue campaigning Cosmic Crusader in the upcoming Group 1 Cox Plate, held over 2,040 meters at Flemington on October 24. The Turnbull Stakes win marks a key stepping stone toward that prestigious event.
Meanwhile, in Sydney, apprentice jockey Siena Grima achieved a breakthrough at Royal Randwick by guiding outsider God’s Window to victory in the A$1.5 million Epsom Handicap, also on October 3. Trained by Chris Waller, Grima became the second female rider to claim this Group 1 mile race, following Kathy O’Hara’s win in 2023 aboard Redener, likewise trained by Waller.
In another Sydney Group 1 contest, the Flight Stakes over 1,600 meters, the John Sargent-trained filly Global Goal secured a narrow victory by a neck under jockey Dylan Gibbons. The race was closely contested in a three-horse finish, adding further excitement to the day’s elite racing program.
