The show, a queer hockey romance filmed in Ontario, follows characters Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov as they navigate their relationship off the ice. While the series has garnered widespread enthusiasm, drawing fans to trivia events, watch parties, and even unauthorized parody musicals, one unexpected focal point has emerged: the cottage featured as the characters' seasonal retreat.

Though the series situates the cottage in Quebec, the actual filming location lies roughly 385 miles west in Muskoka, Ontario, a region often likened to the Hamptons for its upscale lakefront properties. Muskoka, located on the western shore of Lake Muskoka, is known for its scenic natural beauty and long-standing reputation as a coveted getaway spot. Properties in the area range from modest cabins to expansive multimillion-dollar estates, with average waterfront home prices on the three major lakes approaching nearly $3 million Canadian dollars, according to broker John Fincham.

Interest in Muskoka has spiked alongside the show’s popularity. The cottage where Shane and Ilya spend time became available for short-term rental via Airbnb in the spring, with international bookings projected to rise by 34% during the first half of 2025 compared with the previous year, according to Val Hamilton, executive director of Muskoka Tourism. Earlier, the organization launched a marketing campaign called "Come to the Cottage," featuring references to "Heated Rivalry" and emphasizing the local hockey culture through social media channels and public advertisements in Toronto.

For visitors, Muskoka offers a variety of outdoor activities and natural attractions. Hiking trails like the 1.5-mile Peninsula Trail provide bird-watching opportunities, including glimpses of the region’s iconic loons, while nearby Gull Lake Rotary Park and the wharves offer space for swimming, canoeing, and historic steamship cruises. The region’s wild berry harvests, particularly cranberries in Bala—known as Ontario’s cranberry capital—add to the local charm. Visitors can tour cranberry bogs and sample wines at Muskoka Lakes Farm & Winery, which also features a network of scenic walking trails.

One standout event is the free weekly water-skiing show on Lake Muskoka, a long-running tradition featuring barefoot skiing, wakeboarding, and other water sports, hosted by a local family-operated marina since the 1970s.

Despite the surge in visitors drawn by the show, on-site commercial tie-ins remain minimal. During a recent visit, no themed merchandise, specialized tours, or branded food and beverage offerings were observed in Muskoka, leaving the region’s natural and cultural appeal largely intact. This balance offers fans of "Heated Rivalry" an authentic experience alongside longtime residents and tourists seeking the quiet beauty of Canadian cottage country.
