A new injectable treatment called Alidya is gaining attention in the UK as a potential option for reducing the appearance of cellulite, a common skin condition affecting up to 90 percent of women. Developed by Italian plastic surgeon Professor Pasquale Motolese, Alidya has been available in parts of Europe for some time but has only recently been introduced to the UK market.

Cellulite occurs when fat cells push upward against the skin while fibrous bands beneath the skin pull downward, creating the characteristic dimpling often described as an "orange peel" texture. Factors such as hormones, genetics, circulation, collagen levels, and age contribute to the development and visibility of cellulite. Women are particularly susceptible due to the vertical arrangement of connective tissue beneath their skin, which allows fat deposits to protrude more easily. Men, in contrast, have a crisscross pattern of fibers that helps keep fat more evenly distributed. The condition often worsens during menopause as hormonal changes increase fat deposits around the thighs and hips, reduce collagen production, and thin the skin.

Alidya targets several biological mechanisms believed to contribute to cellulite, including inflammation and collagen depletion. The treatment consists of a series of small injections administered just under the skin, containing amino acids, antioxidants, and agents to detoxify heavy metals that may impair lymphatic drainage. Typically, around seven weekly sessions are recommended at a cost of approximately £250 each.

In a trial conducted at Wigmore Medical in central London, the treatment was administered by Anna Baker, a UK-based aesthetic practitioner trained in Alidya. She assessed the patient’s cellulite as Grade 2, characterized by visible dimpling when standing, which is considered the ideal grade for this treatment. While Baker noted that results vary between individuals, she indicated that many patients experience gradual improvements in skin texture and firmness, with full effects becoming apparent a few weeks after the final session.

The procedure involves multiple injections per treatment area, resulting initially in mild bruising and tenderness for several days. Patients are typically advised to use supportive skin creams and collagen supplements to aid recovery. Visible improvements are often subtle at first, manifesting as enhanced skin tone and reduced puffiness before structural changes become noticeable.

Following six treatments over eight weeks, the patient reported a noticeable reduction in the prominence of cellulite, with a more even skin tone and diminished "orange peel" effects, especially on the outer thighs. Although not a permanent cure, ongoing bi-monthly booster sessions are recommended to maintain the results.

While Alidya may represent a promising addition to cellulite management options, it is not considered a miracle solution. Experts caution that individual outcomes may vary and emphasize the importance of setting realistic expectations. The treatment is among a range of approaches aimed at improving the appearance of cellulite rather than eliminating it entirely.
