Counties Manukau retained the Ranfurly Shield after a tightly contested 12-7 victory over Hawke’s Bay at Navigation Homes Stadium in Pukekohe on Saturday night. This marked the Steelers’ sole defense of the season following their recent capture of the prized Log o’ Wood, securing the prestigious trophy’s stay in South Auckland throughout the summer.

The match was a defensive struggle played under heavy rain and on a slippery surface, with both sides battling intensely. Counties Manukau took an early lead through tries from Adam Brash and Melani Matavao, establishing a 12-0 advantage by halftime. Despite missed kicking opportunities—most notably a penalty by AJ Alatimu—Counties’ defense remained resolute throughout.

Hawke’s Bay, returning to challenge for the shield for the first time since losing it earlier this year, found themselves hindered by turnovers, conceding 16 compared to Counties’ six. The Magpies’ center Bailyn Sullivan was ruled out late, prompting adjustments to their backline that featured veteran first-five Lincoln McClutchie making his season debut ahead of Harry Godfrey.

The Magpies managed to breach Counties’ defense just after the hour mark, with Darby Lancaster initiating a promising break that led to a try by Melani Matavao, scored after a well-executed dummy and offload by Folau Fakatava. Still, Hawke’s Bay struggled to find a critical second try and failed to capitalize on late-game opportunities amid crucial turnovers.

One of the match’s defining moments came in the closing minutes when Counties’ lock Veikoso Poloniati secured a decisive lineout steal, preventing Hawke’s Bay from mounting a last-gasp attack that might have forced golden point extra time.

Counties captain Jimmy Tupou, sidelined early due to injury, praised his team’s defensive effort. “I’m pretty speechless... some of those defensive sets I’m so proud of,” Tupou said post-match, highlighting the collective resolve that helped preserve their hold on the shield.

The defeat extended Hawke’s Bay’s losing streak to four games after a strong start to the season with six consecutive wins, ultimately costing them a home quarterfinal berth.

Elsewhere in the National Provincial Championship (NPC) on Saturday, defending champions Canterbury secured a top-two finish by defeating Manawatū 22-12 in Palmerston North. The match featured challenging wet and windy conditions, with points coming late as Canterbury pulled away in the third quarter. All Blacks lock Sam Darry was a late withdrawal for the visitors.

In Hamilton, Tasman denied Bay of Plenty a playoff chance by edging out Waikato 50-33. Despite Leicester Fainga’anuku’s early exit due to concussion, Mako winger Kyren Taumoefolau delivered a standout performance, crossing the try line four times and setting a new single-season NPC record with 18 tries, surpassing the previous mark held by Terry Wright and Brendan Laney.
