Following recent storms, the atmosphere along the River Nene in Ailsworth, Cambridgeshire, has been notably refreshed, with damp earth and the scent of ripe blackberries prevailing in the air. The river meanders quietly through the valley, its waters cascading softly over the Ailsworth weir, where water-crowfoot plants thrive.

Despite the proximity to the busy A1 road, the river’s banks present a vibrant display of native flora, including purple loosestrife, marsh woundwort, water mint, water forget-me-not, and celery-leaved buttercup. Among these, the trifid bur-marigold, known for its distinctive three-part leaves and barbed fruits, has drawn particular attention this year.

The trifid bur-marigold, once more widespread in seasonal flood zones, has faced a national decline attributed to drainage and canalisation of waterways, leading to its classification as “vulnerable” in Great Britain. However, this species has benefited from the current year’s conditions of abundant water availability along with sustained warmth and sunlight, which have fostered lush vegetation growth.

As an annual plant requiring bare, damp mud during spring for seed germination, the trifid bur-marigold’s success at the Ailsworth site is linked to the grazing behavior of Red Ruby Devon cattle. Their activity along the river’s edge creates the disturbances necessary to maintain exposed mud patches, which are essential for the plant’s lifecycle.

Nevertheless, managing such habitats poses challenges. Excessive trampling by livestock can erode riverbanks and increase siltation, potentially hindering fish spawning by clogging clean gravel beds. Conversely, excluding cattle entirely allows more aggressive perennial species to dominate, which can outcompete the bur-marigold by closing over the muddy areas it requires.

The Nene Park Trust, which oversees this section of the river, has adopted a balanced approach through the installation of a gated fence set back from the water. This management strategy permits controlled cattle grazing, providing a “just right” level of disturbance to support the survival of the trifid bur-marigold while mitigating environmental risks associated with overgrazing.
