A couple in Canterbury, Kent, held their wedding reception at a Wetherspoons pub, keeping the event’s cost to approximately £20. Michelle Russell, 47, and Brad Russell, 41, married at a nearby register office before hosting 16 guests for a modest celebration at The Thomas Ingoldsby.

The couple, who met in 2024, opted for a low-key gathering, arranging tables together and sharing a pitcher of vodka mixed with Monster Energy drink. The food menu consisted of small plates including halloumi fries, chicken wings, and chips. Michelle, a civil servant from Dover and mother of two, said they chose the location because they enjoy visiting Wetherspoons and find it affordable and unpretentious.

For the occasion, Michelle wore a dress purchased for £35 from Shein, paired with shoes costing £20 and a £22 wig. She emphasized that the focus of the day was the couple, rather than extravagance, stating, “At the end of the day, it is just about you two.” Michelle also described the event as enjoyable, adding, “Don’t knock it because it was a good laugh.”

The choice of a budget-friendly reception has highlighted the appeal of simple and personal celebrations amid the increasing costs of traditional weddings.
