A couple in South Shields have submitted plans to establish a pet crematorium aimed at providing a private and dignified service for bereaved pet owners. Chris and Gill Baker, who are behind the proposal for Over The Rainbow Pet Crematorium, hope the facility will fill a gap in the local community by offering individual pet cremations combined with a dedicated chapel for families to say their goodbyes.

The Bakers’ interest in creating the venture dates back a decade, rooted in a difficult experience they faced when having their dog, Jessie, cremated. Their aim is to offer a more compassionate and personalised service than what they encountered. If approved by the local council, the crematorium would allow only one pet to be cremated at a time to ensure that 100% of the ashes are returned directly to the owner. The remains would be returned within 24 to 48 hours.

The facility is planned to be located at St Hilda’s Industrial Estate in South Shields and would include a chapel of rest and a farewell room. These areas are intended to provide families with a quiet and private space to spend time with their pet before the cremation process. The operation intends to incorporate memorial products such as caskets, urns, and keepsakes sourced from local and family-run suppliers.

In addition to cremation services, the proposed business would offer at-home euthanasia conducted by a qualified veterinarian, allowing pets to remain in the comfort of their own homes during their final moments. The company also plans to provide home collection via a company vehicle.

The Bakers have expressed their intention to engage with the community through open days, giving the public an opportunity to visit the premises and better understand the need for such a service in the area. The council is currently conducting a consultation period before reaching a decision on the planning application.
