A couple in Birmingham has called for stricter regulations on dog owners following a fatal attack on their cat by two large dogs. Katie Rogers, 24, and Cole Dennick, 23, reported the incident to West Midlands Police on the same day it occurred, July 25, and the force is currently investigating.

The couple's nine-year-old shorthair cat, Loki, was lying in the front garden of their home in the West Heath area when two dogs entered the property and attacked. According to the couple, one dog seized Loki by the throat while the other bit his legs, with the attackers appearing to try to tear him apart.

Katie’s father, Mick, 70, intervened by kicking the dogs away, but Loki sustained severe injuries, including deep bite wounds to his neck and broken hind legs. The cat suffered a seizure before the couple could rush him to a veterinarian. Veterinary staff informed them that the injuries had caused critical damage to Loki’s heart and lungs and that recovery was unlikely, ultimately leading to the decision to euthanize the animal.

The attack has deeply affected the couple, both emotionally and physically. Cole, a delivery driver, described suffering post-traumatic stress disorder and has been signed off work. He emphasized the special bond he shared with Loki, who had been a constant companion since Cole’s near-fatal illness with cerebellitis in 2020. Katie, a law graduate, expressed that the pain from the loss is profound and that they have no plans to get another pet due to the trauma.

The couple has launched a campaign called "Loki’s Law," aimed at pushing for tougher legislation on owners of violent pets to prevent similar incidents in the future. Katie stated that more must be done regarding pet ownership regulations and that owners of dangerous animals should face consequences.

While the exact breeds of the dogs have not been confirmed, they were described as “very large.” The attack was reportedly captured on a neighbour’s CCTV footage. The couple also mentioned that their other pets—a dog named Caspar, nine, and a 15-year-old cat named Socks—have been noticeably affected by Loki’s absence.

West Midlands Police confirmed they are investigating reports of two dogs dangerously out of control on Aldersmead Road, Birmingham.
