Providence authorities have revealed new details surrounding the fatal stabbing of University of Massachusetts Dartmouth football player Marvins Antoine outside a Providence nightclub on September 19. Antoine, 18, was pronounced dead shortly after midnight at Rhode Island Hospital. His teammate, 19-year-old Kensley Macean, was also injured in the incident. Chukwunonso Uzoma-Eze, 19, also known by the nicknames "Chizzy" and "David," has been charged with first-degree murder. His attorney asserts Uzoma-Eze acted in self-defense.

Court affidavits describe a confrontation that began outside Mezzo lounge, where a “college clash party” was taking place. An 18-year-old woman attending the event said she attempted to cut the line at the entrance, prompting a man to shove her. In response, she struck him twice. The woman told police she was at the club with Uzoma-Eze, whom she had recently befriended.

A 21-year-old witness stated that Antoine, Macean, and others were waiting in line when the woman suddenly approached and began hitting Macean. According to the witness, an altercation unfolded, during which Macean and the woman argued. The woman’s companion then allegedly threatened to shoot Macean and his friends.

The witness recounted attempts to de-escalate the situation by removing Macean from the area, but the man accompanying the woman continued to verbally provoke them. The man, identified in the affidavit as Uzoma-Eze, reportedly issued multiple challenges to fight in a nearby parking lot. When Macean approached in an effort to calm tensions, Uzoma-Eze allegedly brandished a large folding knife and began stabbing both Macean and Antoine. The witness identified Uzoma-Eze as the assailant with approximately 80% certainty from a photo.

Further statements from the woman and other students provide insight into Uzoma-Eze’s perspective. After the incident, the woman said Uzoma-Eze told her he was “ready to take it on the chin” and that he was defending himself. Another student, who lived in the same dormitory, recounted receiving a text from Uzoma-Eze saying, “I’m going to be sent back to jail” and explaining that he stabbed others because they tried to jump him.

During Uzoma-Eze’s arraignment, no plea was entered, mirroring standard procedure for felony cases in Rhode Island. His attorney, Noah Kilroy, emphasized that Uzoma-Eze was not the aggressor and insisted the case was one of self-defense. Kilroy cited video evidence showing Uzoma-Eze repeatedly stating, “don’t touch me!” while apparently being surrounded.

Prior to his arrest, Uzoma-Eze contacted campus police for an escort from his dorm to a rideshare after reporting that individuals were aggressively banging on his door. Police found Uzoma-Eze and his brother, who shares the dorm room, with packed bags. Both were detained as part of the investigation.

In response to the stabbing, the Providence Board of Licenses ordered Mezzo lounge closed for one month and prohibited future 18-plus events at the venue once it reopens. The case remains under investigation as the court proceedings continue.
