Jason Hutch, son of Gerry “The Monk” Hutch, appeared before Dublin District Court on Thursday charged with facilitating a criminal organisation. The 37-year-old, also known as Jason Murphy, was brought to court following his extradition from Lanzarote, where he was arrested in early April as part of an extensive investigation into alleged organised crime.
Hutch faces a charge under Section 72 of the Criminal Justice Act, covering the period from April 2016 to September 2021. The charge alleges that he had knowledge of a criminal organisation operating from Lanzarote and that he participated in or contributed to activities intended to facilitate serious offences by the group. The investigation is being led by the Garda National Bureau of Criminal Investigation (NBCI) in cooperation with Spanish authorities.
His arrest was carried out at Casement Aerodrome in Baldonnell shortly after his arrival on a government jet airlifted from Lanzarote. Detective Sergeant Robert Madden of Clontarf Garda Station confirmed Hutch was charged and cautioned upon arrival at 5:05 p.m. He was subsequently taken to Clondalkin Garda Station, where he made no reply to the charge during the formal charging process. An application was made to remand him in custody for one week pending further proceedings.
During the hearing, the judge confirmed that Hutch understood the charges against him. Hutch informed the court he did not have legal representation, citing ongoing industrial action affecting his preferred solicitors. The judge then remanded him to appear before Cloverhill District Court on September 17.
This case follows a lengthy legal process in which Hutch most recently lost his final appeal against extradition to Ireland after his arrest in Lanzarote on April 8. The government flight used to repatriate him departed Dublin at 9:09 a.m., landed in Lanzarote shortly after noon, and returned with Hutch on board by 4:55 p.m. Armed Gardaí provided security at the court during his appearance.
The matter is expected to be transferred to the Special Criminal Court in the coming months. Hutch had no prior criminal convictions before his arrest, which occurred in the context of a wider probe into organised crime and alleged links between former Garda officers and criminal networks. The investigation also involves his father, Gerry Hutch, who remains under scrutiny with files submitted to the Director of Public Prosecutions.
Irish authorities had secured a European Arrest Warrant for Jason Hutch earlier this year. Spanish police arrested him shortly after this warrant was circulated, describing him as a key figure within the Hutch crime organisation. Spanish officials stated the suspect was considered one of the leaders of the gang’s intelligence cell and was involved in managing money laundering operations alongside his father. The joint operation in Spain involved coordination between Spanish law enforcement and Irish Gardaí deployed to assist in his apprehension.
The Hutch organised crime group is reportedly structured around strong family ties across generations and has been the subject of extensive law enforcement attention in both Ireland and abroad.
