Actress Selma Blair appeared in a Queens court Monday evening facing assault charges stemming from a series of incidents last weekend that culminated in her arrest. The “Cruel Intentions” and “Hellboy” star, 54, pleaded not guilty while her legal team sought leniency, citing her medical condition and professional contributions.

Blair’s arraignment followed a chaotic episode aboard Delta Flight 938 from Los Angeles to New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport on Sunday night. According to prosecutors, Blair became violent midair, biting one flight attendant and assaulting another before crew members restrained her. Upon arrival, law enforcement took her into custody.

During transport to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center in Queens, authorities say Blair kicked a police officer multiple times and later attacked a nurse at the hospital. These actions resulted in two additional state assault charges. Federal authorities also filed assault charges related to the in-flight incident.

At the arraignment, Blair’s attorneys argued for special consideration on account of her status and health. Lawyer Joshua Reitzas described Blair as “the gold standard” and urged the court to factor in her career and contributions to others. The defense emphasized that Blair, who has multiple sclerosis, was off her medication and fatigued from work, which they believe contributed to her behavior. They also noted her history of battling alcoholism.

Judge Indira Kahn, presiding over the case, denied the defense’s request to remove restraints for the hearing and dismissed any suggestion that Blair should receive preferential treatment due to her celebrity. She set bail at $20,000 cash or a $60,000 bond, which Blair posted before being released.

Blair has publicly acknowledged struggles with her health and social interactions, reflecting in her 2022 memoir where she described how her condition can lead to overwhelming and difficult situations.

The case remains under investigation as legal proceedings continue.
