Coventry City secured a notable 4-1 victory over Newcastle United on October 12 at the CBS Arena, marking their third consecutive English Premier League win and lifting them out of the relegation zone. Under the guidance of manager Frank Lampard, Coventry became the first team in 127 years to achieve back-to-back wins in the English top flight after starting the season with four successive defeats without scoring.
The Sky Blues opened the scoring early when Jack Rundle converted a penalty awarded following a foul on Sidiki Cherif by Newcastle goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek. This goal was Coventry’s first Premier League goal at their home stadium since 2005. After halftime, Cherif, a 19-year-old forward who made his first Premier League start after joining from Fenerbahce, doubled the lead with a well-placed finish from the edge of the penalty area.
Newcastle’s Sven Botman pulled one goal back in the 70th minute with a powerful shot from 20 meters, but Coventry maintained momentum. Substitute Ellis Simms capitalized on a costly mistake by Newcastle midfielder Joelin Toorn—his first appearance after recovering from injury—scoring with his initial touch to restore a two-goal cushion. Stephen Mfuni, on loan from Manchester City, closed out the scoring with a long-range strike in the 86th minute.
The win marked Coventry’s first Premier League victory over Newcastle since 1999 and helped the club leap from 19th to 14th place in the standings. Prior to this match, Coventry had taken their first points of the season following a 1-0 win over Nottingham Forest before the international break.
Newcastle, managed by Matthias Jaissle, endured a frustrating afternoon despite dominating possession and creating several scoring opportunities. Key chances were squandered, including attempts by Harvey Barnes, Jacob Murphy, and Matias Fernandez-Pardo, with Coventry defender Bobby Thomas twice clearing shots off the goal line. The defeat was Newcastle’s second in six league games this season and denied them a chance to move into fourth place.
After the match, Lampard praised his team’s energy, resilience, and quality, emphasizing the importance of spirit in the demanding Premier League. “If we don’t have that spirit, we haven’t got a chance,” he said, while cautioning his squad to remain grounded. Coventry will seek to extend their winning run when they face Tottenham Hotspur away on October 19.
