Dallas Cowboys cornerback Chauncey Bland is focusing on improving communication within the team as he aims to return to form after two injury-plagued seasons. Bland, who secured a contract extension following standout performances in 2022 and 2023, is emphasizing clear, consistent communication as a key factor in revitalizing the Cowboys' defense.

Bland’s early career featured notable success, including leading the NFL with nine interceptions in 2023 and setting a league record with five pick-sixes that same year. His performances earned him All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors, and he did not miss any games during the 2022 and 2023 seasons. However, his trajectory was disrupted late in 2024 during training camp when he suffered a broken bone in his left foot, causing him to miss the first 10 games of that season. Doctors warned of the injury’s susceptibility to reoccurrence.

Despite a promising return, Bland suffered a similar foot injury in December 2025 that sidelined him again and led to his placement on injured reserve. Over the past two seasons, Bland appeared in only 19 games and registered one interception, a notable decline from his initial strong performances.

Bland attributed some of his foot injuries to challenges with footwear, pointing out that his size 14 feet make it difficult to find cleats that fit properly. He indicated that he is exploring wider cleat options as part of his effort to prevent future injuries. “Definitely frustrating,” Bland said, reflecting on the back-to-back injuries that marked the first of his career.

Cowboys defensive coordinator Parker Schottenheimer affirmed that Bland remains the team's top cornerback despite recent setbacks. Schottenheimer stressed that the team’s priority is enhancing communication across the defense rather than overhauling schemes. The coaching staff continues to rely on established approaches, including aspects of former coordinator Matt Eberflus’s strategy, while placing greater emphasis on players confirming defensive signals with each other to reduce errors.

Bland acknowledged that he is not naturally talkative but understands the importance of vocal leadership on the field. With no guaranteed money remaining on his contract beyond the current season, Bland faces added pressure to prove his durability and effectiveness. If he remains on the Cowboys’ roster come March 17, 2027, his $12 million base salary will become fully guaranteed.

“I always feel like I got something to prove,” Bland said. “Yeah, I mean that adds a little bit to it, but more so just proving to be back on track.”

As Bland works to regain his previous form, the Cowboys are banking on stronger communication and cohesion within their secondary to rebuild a defense that has relied heavily on his talent in past seasons.
