Jack Sinfield’s move from Leeds to Wakefield has proven pivotal, according to Wakefield Trinity head coach Daryl Powell, following the 22-year-old’s standout performance in securing a spot in the Super League Grand Final. Sinfield, son of rugby league legend Sir Kevin Sinfield, played a central role in Wakefield’s 33-6 victory over Wigan on Saturday, scoring a crucial second-half try.
Powell emphasized the significance of giving Sinfield regular playing time after limited opportunities at Leeds. “He was sort of bouncing around at Leeds and not getting a chance and for him as a person, as a player, it was a perfect fit for us,” Powell said. “We made some big calls there, bringing a young half in and giving him his opportunity to play consistently and he’s grabbed that.”
The head coach highlighted Sinfield’s qualities both on and off the field, describing him as “brave,” physically strong with the ball, and possessing a sharp rugby intellect. Powell also praised the younger Sinfield as “an outstanding” player now and predicted a “phenomenal” future. He singled out the influence of both halves, Jack Sinfield and Jake Trueman, who are expected to lead the team in the upcoming final at Old Trafford.
Powell noted that while the first half against Wigan was a tense and closely contested affair, Sinfield and Trueman elevated their play in the second half, contributing significantly to Wakefield’s dominance. Mason Lino’s late-game drop goal also drew mention for its impact. Powell acknowledged the overall strength of the team’s spine, including the performance of Tyson Smoothy, describing him as “exceptional.”
Meanwhile, Sir Kevin Sinfield is engaged in his final challenge of the “7 in 7” ultra-marathon, a personal project running between all English Super League grounds. Beginning Sunday at Hull KR’s Craven Park, Kevin Sinfield has completed legs from Hull KR to Hull FC and onto York Knights’ LNER Community Stadium. His route continues through West Yorkshire and across the Pennines to Lancashire before culminating at Old Trafford. Kevin Sinfield, a seven-time title winner with Leeds, will witness his son’s debut in a Grand Final as the younger Sinfield aims to build his own legacy on the rugby league stage.
