A five-year-old girl remains in stable condition but faces a prolonged recovery after sustaining a brain injury when a car drove into a crowd of Newcastle Knights supporters on Saturday. The incident occurred as thousands gathered to farewell the team bus, which was en route to Sydney for the NRL Grand Final.

The girl and her 31-year-old mother were among several people injured when a golden BMW convertible veered off the road and into the crowd lining the streets of Newcastle. Two other young children, a five-year-old girl and a two-year-old girl, were also hurt, along with five men aged between 24 and 63.

The driver, 18-year-old Indika Bambrick Samarasinghe, who held a provisional P-plate license and had recently lost his driving privileges, was arrested at the scene. He faces nine charges, including three counts of dangerous driving. Samarasinghe has been remanded in custody and is due to appear before court again on October 15.

Emergency services responded promptly to the scene, and the injured were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
