Joy Ballard, a former headteacher known for her role on the television series Educating Cardiff, has been banned from teaching following findings of professional misconduct. The 59-year-old was found to have altered school term dates on two occasions at Ryde Academy on the Isle of Wight in order to fit in luxury cruise holidays.

An independent misconduct panel determined that Ballard’s actions, which included changing the school calendar without proper authorization, represented unacceptable professional conduct. In addition to altering term times, she made personal use of a school vehicle for a trip to France. Further concerns were raised about her use of school funds, which were spent on items such as a karaoke machine, a television, and camping equipment.

The panel concluded that these activities fell short of the standards expected of educators and warranted serious reprimand. As a result, Ballard’s teaching registration has been revoked, effectively barring her from continuing in the profession.

The case highlights ongoing scrutiny over the ethical responsibilities of school leaders and the management of institutional resources. Ballard’s decision to prioritize personal leisure activities at the expense of school operations prompted a rare and severe disciplinary measure within the education sector.
