Cray Wanderers have reached the first round proper of the FA Cup for the first time in the club’s 166-year history, following a penalty shoot-out victory over Bedford Town on Tuesday night. The London-based club, which predates the FA Cup itself, will now face League One leaders Stockport County in a highly anticipated match at their new Flamingo Park stadium in two weeks’ time.

Managed by Tim O’Shea, Cray Wanderers advanced after notable victories against National League South leaders Maidstone United and National League North’s Bedford Town. The upcoming fixture against Stockport County, managed by Jimmy McNulty, is set to draw significant attention, with the BBC scheduled to broadcast the match live on Sunday afternoon.

O’Shea, a former player for Tottenham Hotspur, Leyton Orient, and Gillingham, expressed pride in the team’s achievement. He highlighted the significance of the draw, describing Stockport as “one of the real big boys” and the “League One leaders,” adding that it had provided a boost to the players. O’Shea also praised the club’s owners, Michael Paye and Gary Hillman, for their investment and efforts in developing both the team and the new stadium.

Despite the excitement surrounding the cup run, O’Shea emphasized that improving the club’s league standing remains a priority. Currently positioned 18th in the Isthmian Premier League, albeit with games in hand, Cray Wanderers are determined to balance cup success with league progress.

The milestone represents a historic moment for the club, which is recognized as London’s oldest football team. O’Shea noted the players’ role in cementing their place in Cray Wanderers’ long history, suggesting that their names would be remembered for helping secure this notable cup achievement.

The club is preparing for what is expected to be their first sell-out crowd at Flamingo Park, with hopes of providing a memorable experience for their supporters regardless of the outcome against Stockport County.
