The International Cricket Council (ICC) has unveiled a revised format for the 2027 men’s One-Day International (ODI) World Cup, set to take place in South Africa. The changes include reducing the main group stage from 14 to 12 teams, following a preliminary qualification round involving the three lowest-ranked teams. Only one team from this initial stage will advance to the main tournament, which will feature two groups of six teams each.

A notable modification is the introduction of a “super seven” stage, replacing the previously planned “super six” round-robin. This new phase will determine the finalists without the inclusion of quarter-final matches, eliminating an additional knockout round that traditionally added suspense and high-stakes competition. Tournament organizers have stated that this structure aims to enhance competitiveness and the overall context of the event.

One significant potential impact of the format change is an increased likelihood of an additional match between India and Pakistan during the round-robin phase. Matches between these two cricketing rivals are among the most commercially lucrative and widely viewed in the sport, driven by the passionate followings in both countries. However, political tensions and government restrictions have prevented bilateral series between India and Pakistan since 2006, limiting their encounters to ICC-sanctioned events only.

Alongside the ODI World Cup adjustments, the ICC has also confirmed the format for the 2028 men’s Twenty20 World Cup, which will maintain a 20-team lineup. This competition will feature an expanded group stage, with 10 teams progressing from the initial rounds instead of the previous eight. The two best-performing teams in the “Super 10” phase will receive direct semi-final qualifications, while the next stage will involve an eliminator round to determine the remaining semi-finalists.

These structural revisions by the ICC reflect ongoing efforts to balance competitive integrity, commercial interests, and the evolving landscape of international cricket. The new format for the 2027 ODI World Cup is expected to shape how teams approach the tournament and could influence future scheduling and bilateral relations within the sport.
