Apple’s first television series produced entirely in Australia, the six-part thriller *Last Seen*, has garnered positive attention from local actors and filmmakers for its ability to elevate Australian storytelling to international audiences. The series, featuring Patrick Bramall, Brendan Cowell, Maxine Peake, and Daniel Henshall, was filmed exclusively in Victoria, with key locations including the Western District around Warrnambool and Portland, as well as the Yarra Valley.

*Last Seen* centers on a former detective (Bramall) now working as an emergency dispatcher who receives a call from a teenager he suspects is his daughter, abducted 11 years earlier. Brendan Cowell, portraying Harry Reid—the man linked to the initial abduction but depicted with nuanced complexity—highlighted the significance of Apple TV’s backing in allowing filmmakers greater creative freedom and more time to develop the story. Cowell contrasted this with the common time pressures often faced on local Australian productions, noting the value in having the resources to create “something truly epic.”

Apple specifically opted to film the series in regional Victoria rather than metropolitan hubs such as Melbourne or Sydney, choosing locations that presented both visual appeal and historical resonance. The Western District, known for its rugged coastline and its troubled history as a site of conflict including the Eumeralla wars and indigenous massacres, provided a setting that complemented the show’s tense narrative.

Christian Schwochow, the director, deliberately selected remote and challenging sites, often requiring travel into areas with limited phone reception and wildlife encounters, according to Cowell. Despite these difficulties, the cast and crew embraced the environment, finding inspiration in the region’s distinct atmosphere. The local community offered support during filming, with residents and even local wildlife becoming part of the experience.

Executive producer Hakan Kousetta, co-founder of 60Forty Films and known for projects such as *Slow Horses*, emphasized the growing potential for Australian productions to attract global audiences through streaming platforms. He stressed that successful content relies on stories that can resonate beyond domestic markets, combining ambition and relatable settings to appeal internationally. Kousetta noted that streaming services are increasingly open to investing in Australian drama, tapping into the country’s creative talent pool.

Director of photography Bonnie Elliott described the extensive location scouting process across Victoria, which helped shape both the geographic and emotional landscape of *Last Seen*. The production used fictional town names like Port McKenna alongside references to real places such as Koroit and Naracoorte, blending authenticity with narrative invention. Elliott expressed enthusiasm for filming outdoors, underscoring her preference for on-location shoots over studio work, which contributed to the series’ immersive visual storytelling.
