Cristiano Ronaldo has issued a detailed statement apologizing to fans, teammates, and the Portuguese public following a dispute with Portugal’s head coach, Jorge Jesus, that led to the striker leaving the national team camp last week. The 41-year-old did not name Jesus directly but outlined a series of disagreements that culminated in his acrimonious exit.
Ronaldo’s departure occurred on the eve of a UEFA Nations League match against Norway on September 27, after he was left on the bench for the entire game despite warming up. The striker claimed he had been promised 30 minutes of playing time by Jesus but was ultimately an unused substitute, which sparked the fallout. The ensuing tension necessitated emergency talks to address the rift between Ronaldo and the coaching staff.
In a statement spanning nearly 2,000 words, Ronaldo expressed regret, taking full responsibility for his decision to leave the squad and apologizing to the Portuguese supporters as well as those who traveled to watch him play. He also apologized to his national teammates, acknowledging that departing the training camp was a mistake for which he alone is accountable.
Ronaldo revealed that he had previously been consulted by the Portuguese Football Federation for his opinion on Jorge Jesus prior to the coach’s appointment. Following the Norway match, he and Jesus, along with sporting director Simão Coutinho, engaged in a “very deep and candid” discussion aimed at resolving their differences.
As part of the resolution process, Jesus was expected to address the situation in his subsequent press conference, clarifying that Ronaldo had never demanded to play in that match and that warming him up without actually putting him on the field was a mistake. Ronaldo said they agreed on a document comprising eight specific points to be presented by the coach, and the striker approved this text.
One of the key points outlined in that document acknowledged the error in warming up a player of Ronaldo’s stature—comparable to football legends Pelé or Maradona—without involving him in the match. However, Ronaldo asserts that Jesus failed to fulfill his promise to present these acknowledgments publicly.
According to Ronaldo, two main promises were broken: first, the pledge to give him the agreed playing time in the Nations League game, and second, the commitment by Jesus to communicate the agreed points during the media appearance did not happen. Despite the tension and disagreement, Ronaldo expressed a desire to return to the national team.
The Portuguese Football Federation has not publicly commented on the matter beyond the initial confirmation of Ronaldo's departure from the camp. The situation has drawn significant attention given Ronaldo’s status as Portugal’s most-capped player and a key figure in international football.
