A new luxury train service, the Canyon Spirit, has launched a three-day rail journey through the landscapes of Utah and Colorado, offering passengers an immersive experience across the American Southwest. Operated by the Armstrong Collective, the route extends from Salt Lake City, Utah’s capital, to Denver, Colorado, following the expansion of the group’s existing Rockies to the Red Rocks service.

The Canyon Spirit embarks on its route along the historic transcontinental railway, tracing the contours of the Wasatch Mountains and passing through iconic natural regions near the Utah-Colorado border. The journey showcases a diverse array of scenery, ranging from desert expanses dotted with cottonwoods and tamarisk to the rising pinyon pines and eventually the rugged mountain terrain. Among the notable wildlife observed along the way is the pronghorn, a fast-running native species often mistaken for an antelope but more closely related to giraffes and okapis.

Passengers board the train in Salt Lake City, where the urban basin meets a vast patchwork of agricultural land and salt flats near the Great Salt Lake. The city serves as a gateway to the journey, with its distinctive Mormon heritage, broad boulevards, free tram services, and nearby natural attractions such as Antelope Island, home to free-roaming bison and other wildlife.

The Canyon Spirit experience blends comfort with a sense of adventure. The train consists of passenger cars seating 54 individuals each, available in signature and premier classes. Premier class offers additional amenities, including access to a piano-equipped bar lounge, relaxing armchairs, social games, and an outdoor viewing platform. Seating is designed for comfort, with spacious leather reclining seats and at-table service.

The onboard atmosphere is marked by attentive hospitality from a dedicated crew, who provide expert commentary on the region’s geography and wildlife, enhancing the journey with informative and engaging narration. Curated musical selections in a folk, blues, and soft rock vein play quietly throughout the carriages, complementing the setting.

Meal service features regional fare that reflects local culinary influences, including dishes inspired by traditional Mormon cuisine and Western ingredients. Though hearty rather than gourmet, meals such as baked hashbrown casseroles and bison lasagne aim to provide satisfying taste experiences without detracting from the scenic focus of the trip.

Since launching in April, the Canyon Spirit route offers travelers greater flexibility, running in both directions between two major transit hubs. This facilitates integration with broader travel itineraries exploring the Southwest’s cultural and natural landmarks. The Armstrong Collective, with a background in Canadian luxury train services spanning over three decades, is leveraging its experience to provide a seamless and engaging rail adventure through this rugged and varied region of the United States.
