Chicago Cubs center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong has shown marked improvement in his approach against left-handed pitchers this season, a development that has contributed significantly to the team’s offensive success. The Cubs, who have one of the best offensive performances versus left-handed pitching in Major League Baseball, have benefited from Crow-Armstrong’s enhanced plate discipline and strategic adjustments.

Prior to Sunday’s 6-4 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals at Wrigley Field, Cubs manager Craig Counsell acknowledged the importance of Crow-Armstrong’s progress. “Pete’s improvement against left-handed pitching is significant as to one of the reasons why we’ve improved,” Counsell said, highlighting the broader team success against southpaws.

Crow-Armstrong was 1-for-2 with a hit by pitch against Cardinals left-hander Matthew Liberatore in the series finale. Liberatore struggled with command early, walking one batter and hitting two others, which allowed the Cubs to establish a two-run lead in the first inning. This early advantage was part of the team’s continued strong performance against left-handed pitching.

Statistically, the Cubs rank second in MLB with a .776 OPS against left-handers this year. Crow-Armstrong, the team’s sole All-Star, has seen his batting average against left-handed pitchers rise from .188 with a .594 OPS in 2025 to a career-best .286 with a .922 OPS in the current season. This surge in performance is largely attributed to Crow-Armstrong physically adjusting his stance by moving closer to the plate, which has improved his ability to make disciplined swing decisions.

Counsell emphasized this point, noting that since the season began, the outfielder’s consistency in reading balls and strikes has been a key factor. “One of the things he did to make better swing decisions is to move up on the plate,” Counsell said, underscoring how the small tactical change has paid dividends.

Crow-Armstrong’s improved approach has not only bettered his individual results but also bolstered the overall effectiveness of the Cubs’ lineup, particularly in matchups against left-handed pitching. The team will look to continue this momentum as they prepare to face the Baltimore Orioles in their next game scheduled for Tuesday evening.
