Keider Montero and a group of four relievers combined to limit the Chicago Cubs to four hits as the Detroit Tigers secured a 5-1 victory Wednesday night at Wrigley Field. The win ended the Cubs’ streak of three consecutive series wins and marked another strong showing for the Tigers, who have now won five of their last six series, including two sweeps.

Montero started on the mound for Detroit and delivered a solid performance, striking out eight batters and allowing one run on three hits over five innings. The Cubs’ only run came in the first inning when Seiya Suzuki connected for his 17th home run of the season. Despite the early deficit, Montero helped keep the Tigers competitive by limiting Chicago’s offense.

Detroit’s offense was sparked in the second inning when Spencer Torkelson tied the game at 1-1 with a solo home run to left-center field, his 19th of the year. The pivotal moment came in the fourth inning when Hao-Yu Lee launched a 389-foot three-run homer to left field off Cubs pitcher Colin Rea. This blast gave the Tigers a 4-1 lead and ultimately proved decisive.

Rea took the loss for Chicago, allowing four runs on six hits with five strikeouts in five innings pitched. After Montero’s departure, Detroit’s bullpen took over effectively. Relievers Drew Sommers, Drew Anderson, and Kyle Finnegan combined to concede just one hit. Kenley Jansen then closed out the game with a scoreless ninth inning, preserving the Tigers’ advantage.

The Tigers added an insurance run in the ninth courtesy of a double from Zach McKinstry, extending their lead to 5-1. On the whole, Detroit’s pitching staff demonstrated strong control and resilience, curbing the Cubs’ offense after Suzuki’s early homer.

With the victory, the Tigers continue to build momentum as the season moves forward, while the Cubs’ earlier string of series wins came to an end.
