Cupra has unveiled updates to its Born VZ electric vehicle, blending sportiness with enhanced interior refinement, as it seeks to carve a niche in an increasingly competitive compact EV market. The refreshed model was presented recently in Madrid, where the manufacturer highlighted several notable changes aimed at improving both driving dynamics and cabin quality.

Built on Volkswagen Group’s modular electric platform, the Born VZ is powered by a single electric motor delivering 322 horsepower and 545 Newton meters of torque. The rear-wheel-drive compact hatchback can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 5.6 seconds and reach a top speed of 124 mph. Charging capabilities have been improved, with the VZ version supporting a peak rate of 183kW, enabling an 80% recharge in approximately 29 minutes. The entry-level model, equipped with a 105kW charger, can complete the same charge in 26 minutes.

Exterior updates emphasize subtle evolution rather than a radical redesign. The Born VZ features revised front and rear bumpers, updated lighting signatures including a sharp front LED arrangement and a light bar at the rear, and new wheel designs. Distinctive copper accents, a hallmark of Cupra’s design language, remain integral to the car’s sporty aesthetic.

Inside, the Born sees a more pronounced transformation. The cabin minimizes the use of lower-quality plastics in favor of premium materials, enhancing the overall feel of refinement. Dominating the center console is a responsive 12.9-inch infotainment touchscreen, supplemented in higher trims by a 5.3-inch digital driver display and an augmented reality head-up display. Optional equipment includes a panoramic fixed glass roof that adds to the sense of spaciousness. Rear passengers benefit from a flat floor design that increases legroom and comfort. The interior also features supportive bucket seats designed for both comfort and style.

Technology offerings include standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for seamless smartphone integration, complemented by a high-quality audio system. Practicality remains competitive with a 385-liter boot capacity, aligning with rivals in the compact hatch segment. Cupra estimates a driving range of up to 392 miles for the VZ trim, while the base model offers around 300 miles.

On the road, the Born VZ delivers a notably engaging experience compared with many EV competitors, often criticized for lacking character. The car exhibits nimble handling and strong grip on winding roads, and while the inclusion of artificial engine noise may divide opinion, it contributes to the vehicle’s sporty appeal. Steering was generally well-connected, though some slight twitchiness was noted at higher speeds.

Priced at £45,995, the Cupra Born VZ aims to attract drivers seeking a practical electric hatch that does not compromise on driving enjoyment. By combining sporty performance with meaningful interior upgrades and modern technology, Cupra positions the Born VZ as a viable option in the growing EV hot hatch category.
