After a prolonged absence, CVS Pharmacy has reopened in the Nubian Square area of Roxbury, Massachusetts, introducing a revised store format focused almost exclusively on pharmacy services. Unlike traditional CVS locations, which typically feature a wide selection of retail goods, this new outlet prioritizes prescription fulfillment, immunizations, and health consultations, eliminating most general merchandise aisles.
The return of CVS to Roxbury aims to address longstanding gaps in local access to pharmacy care. For years, residents in the neighborhood have frequently faced the inconvenience of traveling outside the community to obtain prescriptions and related services. The new store model, unveiled in early June, is part of CVS’s broader strategy to innovate the pharmacy experience in underserved areas, responding to industry challenges such as shrinking insurance reimbursements, rising labor expenses, and increased competitive pressures.
Siddharth Tenneti, senior vice president at CVS, emphasized the company’s motivation behind the format shift. “People [have been] taking the bus to go pick up their prescriptions," Tenneti said. "This is our attempt to be a health care answer to the community.” He characterized the small footprint pharmacy as a necessary adaptation following a decade during which CVS and other chains closed multiple stores in the area.
However, the move has elicited a range of reactions from community leaders and residents. Rahsaan D. Hall, president and CEO of The Urban League of Eastern Massachusetts, welcomed the benefit of local pharmacy services returning but criticized what he described as the emergence of a “two-tier retail experience.” Hall pointed out that while consumers in some neighborhoods can access full-service stores, Roxbury residents receive a pared-down version primarily centered on pharmacy functions. He implied that this discrepancy reflects broader inequities in retail and healthcare access.
CVS maintains that the streamlined store model enhances accessibility where traditional stores are no longer viable. The company also highlights such locations for providing essential health services including flu shots and patient consultations, aiming to improve community health outcomes in urban areas.
As retailers continue to adjust to evolving market dynamics, CVS’s Nubian Square pharmacy represents an example of how the industry is balancing cost pressures with the imperative to maintain local presence in historically underserved communities.
