Investigators probing the fire that broke out last week at the Pachpadra oil refinery in Rajasthan’s Balotra district are exploring the possibility that a cyberattack may have triggered the blaze. Security agencies are examining digital logs and operational data to determine if the refinery’s automated control systems were remotely compromised when the incident occurred.

The fire erupted around 2 p.m. on April 20, originating in the Crude Distillation Unit, a critical part of the refinery where crude oil is processed. The Pachpadra facility, operated by HPCL Rajasthan Refinery Limited (HRRL), is considered one of India’s most advanced oil processing plants. The fire broke out just hours before Prime Minister Narendra Modi was scheduled to inaugurate the refinery.

Officials confirmed that security measures around the refinery have been significantly tightened in the aftermath of the fire, including stricter access controls within the campus. Authorities are also conducting verification checks on all residents and workers in the vicinity to identify any suspicious activity or potential security breaches that might be linked to the incident.

Meanwhile, demolition or dismantling of structures at the refinery site has been postponed as forensic teams gather evidence to ascertain the cause of the fire. Investigators are carefully examining the site to determine whether the incident stemmed from a technical malfunction or was the result of deliberate sabotage.

Citing concerns over the safety and security of the area, authorities have proposed removing commercial establishments and shops located within a one-kilometre radius of the refinery. The move aims to reduce crowd density near the facility during the ongoing investigation.

Inquiries are underway with contractor firms, site engineers, and refinery management as part of efforts to establish a clear timeline and cause of the fire. Senior officials from the refinery and local law enforcement have declined to comment publicly until the probe is complete.
