Cynthia Erivo received an MBE from the Prince of Wales during a ceremony at Windsor Castle on Wednesday, recognizing her contributions to the arts. The 39-year-old actress, known for her roles as Elphaba in the film adaptation of the musical "Wicked," American abolitionist Harriet Tubman, and Celie in "The Color Purple," expressed her gratitude for the honor. She had previously described the recognition as an unexpected but deeply appreciated acknowledgment of her work in music and drama.
The ceremony also honored other notable figures, including teenage darts player Luke Littler, who was awarded an MBE for services to the sport. Littler remarked on his surprise and pride at receiving the accolade.
Matt Lucas, known for co-creating the sketch show "Little Britain" and appearing in films such as "Bridesmaids," "Wonka," and "Alice in Wonderland," was appointed an OBE for his services to drama. The 52-year-old actor and comedian attended the Windsor event to receive his award.
Among the other recipients were England footballer Ella Toone and rugby player Sadia Kabeya, both recognized with MBEs. Toone, 26, a midfielder for Manchester United, recently returned to the England national team after recovering from a stress fracture in her hip that had sidelined her for much of the season. She learned of her MBE moments before the ceremony and said she felt "better and stronger than ever." During the event, Toone shared a brief conversation with Prince William, confirming her return to the squad.
Sadia Kabeya, 24, a member of England’s Red Roses rugby team, received her MBE following the team’s recent success in securing a fifth consecutive Grand Slam title after defeating France in Bordeaux on Sunday.
The ceremony highlighted a range of achievements across sports and the arts, with Prince William personally presenting the honors to the recipients at Windsor Castle.
