David Anthony Burke, known by his stage name D4vd, has replaced his private legal team with attorneys from the Los Angeles County public defender’s office as he faces charges related to the sexual assault and murder of a teenage fan. The 21-year-old requested the change ahead of a court hearing on Monday, according to statements made in Los Angeles County Superior Court.

Burke had previously been represented by a trio of private attorneys—Blair Berk, Marilyn Bednarski, and Regina Peter—who confirmed the substitution during the hearing but did not elaborate on the reasons behind it. Judge Charlaine Olmedo approved the request and conducted a sealed hearing to explore the circumstances of the switch. The contents of that hearing remain confidential.

A spokeswoman for the public defender’s office declined to comment on Burke’s financial details but confirmed that an evaluation determined he qualified for public defense services. L.A. County Deputy Public Defender Walid Kandeel emphasized the office’s commitment to providing a thorough defense, stating, “David Burke is entitled to a defense that takes his circumstances seriously and carefully examines the evidence,” while also recognizing the loss experienced by the victim’s family.

The decision to move to public defense comes amid serious allegations that Burke repeatedly sexually assaulted the teen before killing her and dismembering her body in an effort to conceal the abuse. The case has drawn significant attention due to Burke’s public profile as an emerging musician.

Burke’s former lawyers expressed continued support for him and appreciation that the public defender’s office has taken over his case, describing the incoming team as “highly capable and committed.” Outside the courtroom, they declined further comment on the change.

The case remains pending, with no dates yet announced for further proceedings. The public defender’s office will now handle Burke’s defense through the legal process.
