The father of Bradley Sayer, the 18-year-old accused of a deadly shooting at a Chico library, is unlikely to face criminal charges despite the use of his shotgun in the attack, officials said. Bradley Sayer, who graduated from high school recently, is charged with two counts of murder with special circumstances in connection with the June 22 killings.

The shooting resulted in the deaths of Jacob “Cody” Hull, 46, and Robert Johnson, 74, at the Chico library. Investigators have described Sayer as having an obsession with violence and fatal school shootings.

David Sayer, 66, the father, previously disclosed that he had left three firearms—two .22 rifles and a shotgun—unlocked in a walk-in closet within his bedroom at the residence where his autistic son had been staying in the days before the incident. Despite this, Butte County District Attorney Mike Ramsey stated that David Sayer would not be charged, noting that the law requiring safe storage of firearms does not apply in this case, as Bradley Sayer is legally an adult.

The district attorney’s office concluded that the storage of the weapons did not constitute a criminal violation under current laws, which focus on the protection of minors rather than adults in such circumstances. Authorities continue to investigate the shooting and the motives behind Bradley Sayer’s actions.
