HOUSTON — The Houston Astros honored Father’s Day on Sunday by featuring the fathers of three players as ceremonial first pitch throwers before their game against the Cleveland Guardians.
Stephen Matthews, Tom Hader, and Keith Arrighetti each took the mound to throw first pitches to their respective sons: outfielder Brice Matthews and pitchers Josh Hader and Spencer Arrighetti. The event offered a personal moment to celebrate the important role family plays in the players’ lives.
For rookie outfielder Brice Matthews, the occasion held particular significance. A Houston native and the Astros’ first-round pick in 2023 out of Nebraska, Matthews credited his father, Stephen Matthews, as a foundational figure in his baseball career and personal development. He described his father as his first coach and a guiding presence who provided honest feedback and motivation throughout his progression.
Matthews, who made his major league debut last July 11, noted the ongoing close relationship he maintains with his father, especially while the team is in Houston. The two speak frequently about baseball and life, sharing moments of support, debate, and humor.
“He’s just been everything for me, for this journey, just leading me in the right direction,” Matthews said. “(He) pushed me sometimes when I didn’t want to be pushed, (and) he always told me the truth.” He added that having his father nearby during home stands provides invaluable encouragement both on and off the field.
The ceremonial first pitch tradition underscored the familial bonds within the Astros clubhouse, highlighting the role parents play in shaping the players’ careers as they navigate the demands of professional baseball.
