Authorities and family members are embroiled in a developing investigation surrounding Thomas Markle, the estranged father of the Duchess of Sussex, amid allegations involving child sexual abuse materials. The controversy emerged after a cache of explicit images and related materials was discovered in a storage unit rented by Markle in Rosarito Beach, Mexico, where he lived for over a decade.
The storage unit, abandoned after Markle apparently ceased rental payments for approximately two years, was accessed by journalists who uncovered a large collection of magazines, photographs, videotapes, and computers containing disturbing content. Among the items found were magazines published in Asia depicting child pornography, black-and-white photographs showing naked young girls with one recurring subject, voyeuristic beach images, and negatives of a woman bound and directed by a man during a photoshoot. The collection also included videotapes with questionable titles such as “Boys – Brother and Sister – Russian XX” and “Manila Nites,” although the precise content of these tapes has not been disclosed.
In addition to explicit material, the unit contained a stack of books related to sexual behavior and historical imagery of young girls, as well as multiple digital storage devices, hard drives, and cameras. One particular computer tower bore signs of attempts to erase data via wiping software. A notable paper plate in the unit was inscribed with "DARK WEB" alongside various web addresses, suggesting possible exposure to illicit online content.
The investigation intensified after Markle’s son, Thomas Jr., who previously cared for his father in Cebu, Philippines, reported to local police discovering what he described as “hundreds, if not thousands” of child sex abuse images stored on digital devices. Filipino authorities have since obtained a search warrant for Markle’s devices, and the FBI in the United States is also reportedly involved. Thomas Jr. has publicly condemned his father, stating he no longer wishes to maintain contact and describing him as a “monster.” Markle Sr., 82, who is currently in a rehabilitation facility in Florida following a recent leg amputation, denies all allegations of involvement with child pornography. He has acknowledged paying for sex in the Philippines but denied ever engaging with anyone under the age of 18 or possessing illicit images.
The family rift deepened after a letter, reportedly from Meghan Markle and shared by her legal representatives, formally cut ties with her father, accusing him of abusing young girls and barring him from seeing his grandchildren. Meghan Markle has stated she was informed of child sexual abuse allegations against her father as early as 2019 by Scotland Yard, with the Metropolitan Police recently self-referring their handling of some evidence to the police watchdog amid concerns over communication between agencies.
Meanwhile, Samantha Markle, Thomas Markle’s daughter, alongside her partner, has disputed the allegations, asserting that her father never directly handled the materials under investigation and questioned the jurisdiction of US authorities over the case due to Markle’s prolonged absence from the United States. They also referenced the statute of limitations as a possible factor in the case’s viability.
Local residents in Rosarito Beach described Thomas Markle as reclusive and rarely seen outside his home in a gated community. The full scope and implications of the investigation remain unfolding as authorities in the Philippines continue to examine digital evidence, while US agencies reportedly assess potential charges. If convicted, Markle could face significant prison time under applicable laws related to child exploitation.
