Dak Prescott set a new Dallas Cowboys franchise record for career touchdown passes on Sunday, throwing four touchdowns to lead Dallas to a 37-20 victory over the Washington Commanders at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Prescott’s 249th touchdown pass, which broke Tony Romo’s previous record, came on his second scoring toss to wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, who finished with 153 receiving yards.

Tight end Jake Ferguson caught the other two touchdown passes from Prescott, who completed 26 of 32 passes for 279 yards without throwing an interception. The win improved the Cowboys’ record to 1-1 and extended Prescott’s home winning streak against NFC East opponents to 20 games.

The game took a distressing turn late in the first half, as Washington quarterback Jayden Daniels suffered a left elbow injury. Daniels dislocated the same elbow he injured last November, when he missed most of the previous season after a similar incident against Seattle. The injury occurred during a play in which the Commanders were positioned at the Dallas 1-yard line with three seconds remaining before halftime. As Daniels pulled back after the snap, Dallas left guard Chris Paul stepped on his foot, causing Daniels’ left elbow to bend awkwardly as he attempted a wild, incomplete pass.

Daniels initially remained down on the field before beginning to walk to the sideline and then collapsing again. After medical attention, he left the field via cart with his head covered by a towel. The injury occurred moments before halftime, as most players from both teams were already headed to their locker rooms. Fox NFL analyst Tom Brady was visibly shocked by the replay of the injury.

Daniels had kept Washington competitive with his mobility, rushing for 69 yards on seven carries and passing for 96 yards on 11 completions in 17 attempts before exiting the game. After the injury, veteran backup quarterback Marcus Mariota entered and connected with Stefon Diggs for a touchdown, narrowing Dallas’ lead to 30-20 with nine minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.

Despite Mariota’s efforts and Diggs’ two touchdown receptions, the Cowboys responded with an 11-play drive that culminated in Lamb’s 24-yard touchdown catch, helping to secure the victory. The Commanders fell to 0-2 on the season while facing ongoing challenges at the quarterback position due to injuries.
