Arike Ogunbowale delivered a record-breaking performance to help the Dallas Wings extend their WNBA first-round playoff series against the Golden State Valkyries. Ogunbowale scored 45 points, the most ever in a WNBA playoff game, leading the Wings to a 108-100 overtime victory on their home court Wednesday night and setting up a decisive Game 3.
Ogunbowale, a four-time All-Star, surpassed her previous playoff scoring best of 24 points by a wide margin. She hit a critical three-pointer in the final seconds of regulation to tie the game at 93-93, forcing overtime. In the extra period, she continued her strong showing with two three-pointers early on, including a banked shot that gave Dallas a 103-100 lead with just under two minutes remaining. The Wings maintained their edge to secure the win.
The closing moments of regulation featured some controversy. After Ogunbowale’s tying shot, Gabby Williams of Golden State was initially called for an offensive foul during an inbound play following a Golden State timeout. However, the call was overturned on replay review. This reversal eliminated what would have been free throws for Dallas’s Aziaha James and instead resulted in a jump ball with around three seconds left. Golden State’s final attempt to win the game fell well short at the buzzer.
The victory set up a winner-take-all Game 3 on Friday night in San Francisco. The Valkyries, who won the opening game of the series by 24 points, are seeking their first playoff series win in the franchise’s sophomore season. The Wings now have an opportunity to advance further after tying the series at 1-1 with their comeback effort.
