Australian television drama continues to explore new narrative territory with the release of "Dalliance," a six-part series that delves into the complexities of life and relationships among older adults. Created by writers Pip Karmel, Chris Lee, Liz Doran, and Jock Serong, and directed by Emma Jackson and Matt Saville, the show centers on a group of friends in their 60s in Sydney, offering a nuanced portrayal of aging rarely seen on screen.

The series stars Hugo Weaving as Billy, a congenial retired cameraman whose unexpected encounter with Dani, a caterer played by Heather Mitchell, sets off the reunion of an old social circle. Their initial meeting takes place on a ferry during a sailing event in Sydney Harbour, where Billy hides from his brother Gary, portrayed by David Wenham. The tension between the siblings revolves around issues of inheritance, revealing a history marked by Gary’s struggles with addiction and incarceration. Despite their fraught past, the brothers’ relationship is depicted with a mix of humor and frankness.

Billy’s gesture of placing a winning bet for Dani leads to a deepening connection with her and subsequent introductions to his wife Rose (Georgie Parker) and other longtime friends. These characters include Billy’s former rugby league teammates—Rex (Russell Dykstra), who is in a relationship with younger partner Dylan (Ryan Panizza); playboy Mani (Kirk Torrance); and the domesticated Luke (Wayne Blair), who has been married for decades to Adele (Carolyn Bock). The women in the group, including Sarah (Catherine McClements) and Rose, share a bond forged over years, marked by candid and often irreverent interactions.

"Dalliance" eschews traditional plot devices such as crime or suspense, focusing instead on character-driven storytelling that explores themes of friendship, love, regret, and resilience in later life. Through flashbacks and present-day scenes, the series gradually reveals the outcome of Dani and Billy’s night together, which remains central to the narrative. The show candidly addresses the realities of aging, including the navigation of romantic relationships, marital challenges, the impact of grief, and the pursuit of personal fulfillment.

Critics note that while some characters, like Adele, are less fully developed, the ensemble as a whole offers an authentic and often poignant portrayal of people who have accumulated decades of life experience. The series highlights the value of long-term connections and the emotional richness that can emerge with age, challenging conventional television portrayals that tend to prioritize younger demographics.

"Dalliance" is currently available for streaming on Paramount+.
