Kimberly Guilfoyle resigned as the U.S. ambassador to Greece on Tuesday following multiple reports alleging misconduct, including claims that she requested a Republican donor to pay off her personal credit card debt. The White House confirmed that it had asked Guilfoyle to step down amid the controversy.

In a brief statement responding to questions about Guilfoyle’s status, White House press secretary Katie Zacharia said the administration had requested her resignation and acknowledged her contributions. “We have asked Ambassador Guilfoyle to resign. She has been a wonderful asset to the team, and we wish her well,” Zacharia said.

President Donald Trump commented on the situation before departing for Alaska, stating that Guilfoyle had been performing well in her role but expressed concern over media reports regarding her conduct. “She was doing a good job,” Trump said, but added, “I didn’t like what I read.” He also sought to distance himself from her personally, emphasizing that Guilfoyle was once engaged to his oldest son, Donald Trump Jr., but was “not a member of my family.”

The allegations against Guilfoyle center on an account by Republican donor Eric Deters, who told a major financial publication that she asked him in mid-2025 to wire $100,000 to cover her American Express credit card balance shortly before her Senate confirmation hearing. Deters alleged that Guilfoyle promised to facilitate connections to Trump administration officials who might assist him with tax and legal issues in return.

In response to the accusations, Guilfoyle issued a public statement on social media affirming her intention to vigorously defend her reputation and integrity. She described the end of her ambassadorship as “coming to an end” but maintained that false claims would not overshadow her decades of public service.

Guilfoyle’s appointment had drawn attention due to her prior high-profile political work and her personal relationship with Donald Trump Jr. Her tenure as envoy to Greece, which began earlier this year, is now concluding amid this scrutiny. The White House has not disclosed who will succeed her in the role.
