Dame Judi Dench has announced her retirement from acting due to deteriorating eyesight caused by age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The 91-year-old actress revealed that her condition, first diagnosed in 2012, has significantly impaired her ability to recognize faces and read, leading her to step away from film and stage work.

In an interview on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, Dame Judi described the challenges she faces daily, including mistaking strangers for acquaintances. “I can’t be on stage. I can’t do a play anymore. I can’t do a film. I can’t read anymore,” she said. She explained that she can no longer see faces clearly and must rely on memory and limited visual input to interpret her surroundings.

The actress, known for her roles as M in the James Bond franchise and Queen Elizabeth I in Shakespeare in Love— for which she won an Academy Award— also expressed sadness about missing elements of the natural world. “They said this summer was sensational with bluebells. I couldn’t see one,” she said, reflecting on how the condition has affected her experience of nature, which she has long cherished.

Dame Judi also commented on her broader feelings about aging, describing it as “rubbish” and advising others to keep active despite physical limitations. She recounted giving up driving several years ago due to her vision, calling it “one of the most traumatic moments” of her life but recognizing the safety concerns involved.

AMD is a common, progressive eye condition that does not cause complete blindness but can severely affect central vision, making tasks such as reading and face recognition difficult.

Born in York, Dame Judi began her acting career in 1957, performing with the Royal Shakespeare Company and starring in West End productions such as Cabaret. Her portrayal of M in the Bond series spanned eight films from 1995 to 2015. In 2026, the Shaftesbury Theatre, the largest independent venue in London’s West End, was renamed the Judi Dench Theatre in her honor. She described the recognition as “truly overwhelming” and emphasized her lifelong commitment to live theatre as a means of storytelling and entertainment.

Dame Judi was married to the late actor Michael Williams from 1971 until his death in 2001. She has one daughter, Finty, and a grandson, Sam.
